My name is Lakshmi. I am forty-one, and I farm a small rented plot outside our town with my wife. We have three children. For most of my life I have worked other people’s land — some weeks there is work, some weeks there is none.
The uncertainty. When the rains are poor or there is no day work, we cut meals and the children stay home because we cannot pay the fees. I do not want my children to inherit that same worry.
A way to farm for myself. With two goats for milk and a pump to water the vegetables, I can grow and sell all year instead of waiting to be hired. That is what I asked for.
That in a year I am not asking anyone for work — that people come to buy from me. And that all three of my children are in school, every term.

I met Lakshmi at his home and on his rented plot on 12 May 2026. He lives with his wife and their three children, aged 4, 8 and 11, in a rented two-room house. Household income is irregular — in a good month roughly €48 from day labour and the sale of surplus vegetables; in a poor month, close to nothing.
His plan is specific and, in my assessment, sound: to work his own plot productively rather than depend on day labour. The agreed items were two dairy goats, a treadle irrigation pump, and a season of vegetable seed. Once Lakshmi's goal is met, the funds will be delivered in person and each purchase recorded here.
